W2W Community

Chapter 4
story-hero

Elisa Vottero, a former ski racer and current ski instructor in Italy, had the idea years ago to create a community

of women who could inspire each other through skiing. “I wanted to share experiences with women—regardless of their level—but that was back in the day when there wasn’t anything like that,” she said.

Then, in 2017, she found Blizzard Tecnica—or rather, Blizzard Tecnica found her. She was invited to be a part of the W2W focus group in Italy, and she was amazed to see what she had been envisioning starting was already up and running.

Since then, she’s become more involved and is now running events that bring women together on and off the slopes.

What she sees happen during these events is nothing less than extraordinary. Women who have never met each other before leave with lasting friendships. They conquer their fears. They speak up about their opinions. They encourage each other. They find freedom. “When you are without judgement, you can just be yourself and share the passion and share the ideas with the other women,” she said.

The feeling when they all get together, she said, is “like a volcano,” an outpouring of expression that doesn’t come out in mixed-gender groups.

The women support each other. I can feel a sense of community, not just because the boots and skis are made for us, but because we found a new family. The more we share our thoughts, the more we like to stay together.

Between us, there is no fear. We have many points of view, and we see things in different way. And when there are no men there, we feel more relaxed to say it.

But the real magic, she said, is what happens afterward. “The things we learn in the mountains, we bring them outside into real life,” she said. “Every time we finish, we feel stronger.”

A decade ago, the ski industry had a problem it barely acknowledged: Half the population that has been systematically overlooked since the beginning of time were being sold gear that was, by and large, still designed and made by men.

“Three…two…one…dropping!” We skiers all know this line, radioed from every athlete in ski movies just before shredding an Alaskan spine, artfully arcing above the slough spilling down the troughs.
